BOOST-3 is a NEW research study to compare two strategies for monitoring and treating patients with traumatic brain injury in the intensive care unit. 1) Medical care based on monitoring of pressure in the brain (intracranial pressure or ICP). 2) Medical care based on ICP and the amount of oxygen in the brain (brain tissue oxygen or PbtO2). The results of this study will help doctors discover if including brain tissue oxygen monitoring for patients with TBI will improve their neurological outcomes at 6 months after the injury. The unique feature about this study is that patients may be enrolled in the study before the researchers are able to obtain consent from the patient or their loved ones due to the emergency situation of the condition and the need to intervene quickly. The ethical review board reviewing this study has asked that it be presented at Glazier. Dr. Jones, Associate Professor, Emergency Medicine, UTHealth McGovern Medical School will talk about this study. In addition to speaking about the study, Dr. Jones will address about traumatic brain injury in general and how seniors are at risk due to falls.
